Entergy Texas is an electric power generation and distribution company headquartered in The Woodlands, Texas. The company was founded in 1911 as Eastern Texas Electric, a holding company for Stone & Webster. On August 25, 1925, the Gulf States Utilities Company was incorporated in the state of Texas.

Entergy’s origins begin in 1913, where a man named Harvey C. Couch put together the Arkansas Power Company to help bring electricity to the more remote regions of Arkansas. As the company grew, Couch started buying up more power companies. His biggest acquisitions were in Mississippi, and he soon developed a secondary facility in Louisiana to aid them.

However, Couch soon ran into a competitor in the form of EBASCO (the Electric Share and Bond Company). While they fought for a while, the two later fused into a single company around 1925, which they named the Electric Power and Light Corporation. This gave them a massive portion of control within the power industries of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Arkansas.

But trouble was on the horizon. The U.S government under Franklin Delano Roosevelt soon passed the Public Utilities Holding Company Act of 1935. This act took away some of the privileges afforded to bigger power companies and forced them to break into smaller chunks.

Despite a court fight, Couch and his company lost, breaking up their organization.

The group recovered by taking smaller portions of its company and rebranding them into Middle South Utilities. As the years wore on, the company underwent a name change to Entergy and acquired the Texas-based energy company Gulf State Utilities. Since then, they’ve expanded out across the southeast region of the U.S to provide power.

A vertically integrated utility receives a certificate by the public utilities Commission of Texas to operate under a traditional monopoly-granted franchise.
