Entergy Texas is an electric power generation and distribution company headquartered in The Woodlands, Texas. The company was founded in 1911 as Eastern Texas Electric, a holding company for Stone & Webster. On August 25, 1925, the Gulf States Utilities Company was incorporated in the state of Texas.
Entergy’s origins begin in 1913, where a man named Harvey C. Couch put together the Arkansas Power Company to help bring electricity to the more remote regions of Arkansas. As the company grew, Couch started buying up more power companies. His biggest acquisitions were in Mississippi, and he soon developed a secondary facility in Louisiana to aid them.
However, Couch soon ran into a competitor in the form of EBASCO (the Electric Share and Bond Company). While they fought for a while, the two later fused into a single company around 1925, which they named the Electric Power and Light Corporation. This gave them a massive portion of control within the power industries of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Arkansas.
But trouble was on the horizon. The U.S government under Franklin Delano Roosevelt soon passed the Public Utilities Holding Company Act of 1935. This act took away some of the privileges afforded to bigger power companies and forced them to break into smaller chunks.
Despite a court fight, Couch and his company lost, breaking up their organization.
The group recovered by taking smaller portions of its company and rebranding them into Middle South Utilities. As the years wore on, the company underwent a name change to Entergy and acquired the Texas-based energy company Gulf State Utilities. Since then, they’ve expanded out across the southeast region of the U.S to provide power.
Entergy’s chief goal is to provide electricity and utilities to both residential and business areas of Texas. They do this through a variety of power sources. These range from traditional gas and coal methods to new methods like nuclear, hydroelectric, and solar power.
It’s also important to note that Entergy does way more than provide power to the people of Texas. They also take steps to make power more efficient for everybody through their partnership with Energy Star. In fact, they produce more than half of their energy through efficient means and are working to cut their green gas house emission levels in half by 2030.
This includes the promotion and incorporation of Energy Star certified products into their work. They also work with the community to address issues regarding heat ventilation within homes.
Entergy also makes a lot of developments to Texas’s power infrastructure. They add additional power lines to bring energy to underserviced areas and work to build new power stations that provide clean, fast energy.
Another contribution Entergy makes is through their “The Power to Care” program. If customers make a small donation to the company, the company will match these donations towards providing poor elderly or disabled people with power.
Entergy offers a lot of different programs with their power supply to aid customers. One such bonus is their Home Efficiency Program, which helps to plug cracks or seal windows in your house. This prevents air from leaking out of your house, which would up your heating bill and contribute to power waste otherwise.
Another such program is their AC Tune-Ups. Here, they work on your AC unit to make sure it’s top shape while covering a significant portion of the cost themselves. They will also help integrate EnergyStar-approved technology into a house if you’re moving into a new place.
Another perk of Entergy is its flexibility when it comes to paying your electric bill. They offer a wide host of payment methods, from over the phone to mail-ins. that being said, Entergy does require you to pay a little extra when using certain payment methods (like paying online)
They also breakdown your bill so you can see exactly what factors produce the total you have to pay. You can set up alerts from then on your mobile device so you don’t have to worry about forgetting and falling behind.
So where does this come out in terms of how much you’re paying? Well, according to Entergy’s website, you’ll pay around $121.06 before taxes for every 1000 kWh (kilowatt-hour) you use. It’s important to remember that this value varies depending on your situation, but it’s a good ballpark estimate to keep in the back of your mind.
So what do the people think of what Entergy promises it will deliver?
Most user reviews show Entergy’s services to be reliable in bringing power to your home: they know how to do their job. Where the company falters, however, is with its customer service interactions.
Some customers however cite Entergy as difficult to reach or poor at communicating with the customer, from Caitlyn on pissedconsumer.com in July 2020 to Sandra S on the same site in February 2020.
Chelsea B from pissedconsumer.com also points out that Entergy’s website seems ill-designed in a post from July 12th, 2020. The site crashes at important points or fails to perform certain tasks.
Finally, Entergy does not possess accreditation from the BBB (Better Business Bureau).
And there you have it! Now that you know more about Entergy Texas. Since Entergy operates in regulated areas in the Woodlands and other places, you might not have the power to choose a different electricity provider there.
However, if you are looking for providers for other service areas you might want to skip the future work of researching all the other energy companies in Texas. In such a case, the best thing to do is to take advantage of EnerWisely’s free smart shopping tools so you can find the best energy company for your needs today!
Deregulated energy service areas are places where electricity providers are allowed to compete and sell retail electricity products to residential, commercial, and industrial customers.
In Texas the deregulated electricity areas include:

Entergy Texas vertically integrated utility company.
A vertically integrated utility receives a certificate by the public utilities Commission of Texas to operate under a traditional monopoly-granted franchise.
Being a vertically integrated utility means that Entergy is the only entity in charge for the whole for the entire generation, transmission, and delivery of electric service in their approved area of operation.
ERCOT is the Electric Reliability Council of Texas. The utilities that operate within the ERCOT electricity market are part of the deregulated market and they can only be in charge of the transmission and distribution infrastructure.
By being a monopoly, Entergy is a non-ERCOT utility. However, independently of being within the ERCOT electricity market or outside of it, the state’s Public Utility Commission approves the retail rates for all the utilities that provide electric service in Texas.
Since vertically integrated utilities are monopolies and their customer don’t have multiple providers to choose from, they must offer electric service to all customers within its approved service area.
As such, vertically integrated utilities must operate under non-discriminatory basis based on the terms and conditions adopted by the public utility Commission of Texas.
